What is the Accessible Information Advisory Group?

Thinklusive work with the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board to improve the accessibility of local NHS information. 

The Accessible Information Advisory Group advises the Integrated Care Board and helps make sure people receive NHS information that is accessible to them. We meet every 2 months, usually online, on Zoom. 

Information needs to be accessible in lots of different ways. Accessible information can include things like summaries, videos, audio files, easy-read, large print, colour contrast, and information available in different languages. 

Since 2016, The NHS Accessible Information Standard sets out how providers and commissioners of NHS and publicly funded adult social care services should ensure disabled people and people with impairments or sensory loss:

•    can access and understand information about NHS and adult social care services

•    receive the communication support they need to use those services

Who is part of the group?

The group has a diverse membership, with people bringing their lived/work experience into group discussions. 

Our current membership includes:

•    People with a learning disability 

•    People with Autism 

•    People from Ethnic Minority communities 

•    People with physical disabilities 

•    People with sensory impairments 

•    People with Dyslexia 

•    People who speak/read English as their additional language

•    People working in the NHS

•    People working in the voluntary & community sector  

•    people working in local Councils

How can the group help with my project?

The Advisory Group helps to support NHS colleagues to be assured that their project is accessible to as many people as possible. 

The group can help with any public or patient-facing information and help at any stage of a project. 

Over the last year, we have worked on lots of projects, including: 

•    Co-creation of accessible materials to support the Suffolk and North East Essex Elective Access Policy 

•    Discussion around the implementation of the NHS Reasonable Adjustment Digital Flag 

•    Scrutinising accessibility on the Let’s Talk SNEE website

•    Scrutinising Accessibility of the Suffolk Children and Young People's Portal

Who can use the Accessible Information Advisory Group?

It is available for all partners in the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System.

The group meets every two months, and Max & Mary-Lou (who organise the group) can arrange to meet before meetings to discuss the best approach, and to help make presentations accessible.
