RES: Pneumonia Vaccine

Consultation has concluded

Welcome to the Suffolk and North East Essex Pneumonia Vaccine conversation.

The pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. It's also known as the pneumonia vaccine.

Within the NHS Long Term Plan, respiratory disease is a key area of focus. It affects one in five people in England and is the third biggest cause of death. The priorities for respiratory disease set out in the NHS Long-Term Plan are:

• Detection and diagnosis of respiratory problems earlier

• Doing more to support those with respiratory disease to receive and use the right medication

• Improving our response to pneumonia

• Improving the reach and impact of pulmonary rehabilitation

Pneumonia continues to place huge pressure on the NHS – improving our response will help to relieve the pressure, particularly during winter. Pneumonia is a leading cause of admission to hospital, despite being avoidable in many cases. Pneumonia also disproportionally affects older people, with incidence doubling for those aged 85- 95 compared with those aged 65-69. Nationally, acute pneumonia admissions have risen by 35% since 2013 with stays in hospitals getting shorter, indicating admission may not have always been essential.

Core20PLUS5 is a national NHS England approach to inform action to reduce healthcare inequalities at both national and system level. The approach defines a target population – the ‘Core20PLUS’ – and identifies ‘5’ focus clinical areas requiring accelerated improvement. One of key areas is Chronic respiratory disease, with a clear focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) driving up uptake of COVID, flu and pneumonia vaccines to reduce infective exacerbations and emergency hospital admissions due to those exacerbations.

As an Integrated Care System we are committed to ensuring eligible COPD patients have access to pneumonia vaccines and addressing heath inequalities. We would be interested to understand from your perspective if you have been experienced challenges or barriers in accessing the pneumonia vaccine service and what support is needed to address these issues.

This is a place where you can join in the conversation and share your experiences, thoughts and ideas.
